Protecting Our Children

In the wake of shooting rampages in public schools and campuses like Virginia Tech the question arises, how can we protect our children in today's world? What can we do to give them a better chance to survive?

Three days after the massacre at Virginia Tech our local highschool was shut down due to a terroristic threat made by some students. Three students are being charged according to today's newspaper. Can we save our children from themselves?

It seems to me that today's world offers more opportunities than ever before in living memory. On the other hand a casual mistake or wrong choice can be life destroying. When I was in high school we didn't have to worry about what came out of our mouths. We only had to worry about getting caught in the act.

Not true for our children. Saying the wrong words can land them in deep trouble and perhaps in jail. In this delicate and fragile environment the thing needed most is an accurate perception of physical reality. Delusional and drug induced thinking play havoc on adolescent minds already prone to idealistic thinking.

There is a paradox at work here because when people think only of themselves society reaches its lowest point. At the lowest levels tyrants and government make slaves of people. Being self-centered and self-absorbed is not the answer to societies problems. It will not protect our children.

The emotional force of children is a force. The emotional force of our society is a similar force. These forces must be regulated by intellect and by conscious awareness. Being ruled by terror and fear of bodily harm is not in our best interests or the best interests of our children. It will only bring out the worst in them and in our government.

Our children and our society both need good examples to inspire them. When our children are inspired and when our society is inspired new heights are reached and civilizations enter golden ages. These examples need to be real and not fictional HollyWood actors and actresses.

As more and more people become victims of suicidal depression the question becomes even more urgent. Where are the high ideals and good examples we need? Where are the rugged individualists and the survivalists that can adapt and be successful in the changing world our children will inherit? Who is willing to come out and show us how it is done?

When so many people believe the game is stacked against them and they have no chance of winning they need to see others win at life. Seeing others win inspires all of us to find our own way to success and glory. This is the best possible way we can protect our children and help them to embrace the world they will inherit.

Who knows why one person gives up and dies while another struggles on through overwhelming odds and comes out on top? We all want to survive. But are we willing to do what needs to be done?
