Internet-The Final Frontier

In my last post I spoke about educational freedom and how the Holy Catholic Church was the sole "authorized" distributor of knowledge and literacy from the dark ages into the advent of the modern scientific age. This was true for western Europe.

The church no longer holds that absolute position thanks to the protestant rebellion and movements like Rosicrucianism and Freemasonry. These organizations taught higher philosophical concepts and universal truths to the common person through a series of dramas or initiations and oral learning. The candidate did not need to be literate.

At its height Freemasonry could claim a lodge in almost every community in the western world. This held true even when it was persecuted by the Holy Catholic Church as heresy. There was an alternative voice in the world that offered freedom and personal expression. What they created became known as scientific method and led to our public educational system. They were always strong advocates of public education.

Times have changed and today's universities and publishing empires hold the power the church once had. In a burst of irony what once brought freedom now strangles freedom and independent thought. Anyone that has tried to succeed in life without a college education or get a book published knows what I mean. Being successful in today's world has become more about who you know than how good you are.

Still, throughout history as power is accumulated in the hands of a few and becomes abused there is always a frontier of unregulated freedom where people can go to seek their fortunes.

As Europe became too opressive America became the place of personal freedom and opportunity for many seeking religious and philosophical freedom.

Now Big Brother tightens his unrelenting technological fist around our personal lives and the internet has become the alternative. College degrees are becoming increasingly worthless and people are searching for alternatives.

Instead of spending thousands of dollars on college classes and a lifetime of debt people are learning for free on the internet. Instead of paying $8.50 for a paperback book, people are finding alternative literature for free on the internet. This is still in a transitional phase but its effects are being felt around the world.

Advocates of a free internet have become the Rosicrucians and Freemasons of today's world. They are still largely unorganized but in the process of drawing together under the umbrella of something called "Modern Survivalism". Modern Survivalism is hard core reality in a technological world in combination with spiritual values and global ideals.

Its initiations include surfing the internet and learning how to create blogs and personal web pages. Its social element includes chat rooms that include people of like interests from around the world. This is truely an international community and a political power.

2-Educational Freedom

Imagine a world that is illiterate. For most of the past 2000 years education of any kind was not offered to the public. In Europe the Greek philosophers were an exception and a high point of literacy and deep thinking. Much of these concepts found their way into the Roman Republic and influenced the entire world.

Other European cultures that embraced literacy were the Irish and of course the Jews. It is interesting that both of these highly educated cultures were also highly persecuted. Apparently it is dangerous to know too much.

Christianity and the Roman Catholic Church plunged Europe into the Dark Ages and much knowledge was lost forever. It is during the rulership of the Roman Catholic Church that the story of Rosicrucianism and Freemasonry begins.

But perhaps first a little insight into Christianity itself and the Old Testament that it shares with Judaism and Islam.

Our story begins in ancient Egypt with the pharoh Aknaten. This pharoh brought the concept of monotheism into the world for the first time. It was not the Jewish religion that believed this. It was the Egyptian mystery school at Heliopolis. The Jewish people were still worshiping idols such as the golden calf.

The name of the one and only true God was "Ra" and much of the surviving literature about "Ra" and his worship is very beautiful.

To make a long story short, The Jewish people were living in Egypt at this time. It was when Moses was born. The Jewish people were being persecuted and Mose's mother hid him in a basket and floated him down the Nile to where the daughter of the Pharoh found him.

This princess raised Moses as her own child and he was taught in the ancient mystery schools where he learned about monotheism and the one God. He also learned about magick and healing.

Later Moses led the Jewish people out of Egypt and into the wilderness. He went up into the mountain and came down with the 10 commandments that "Jahweh" had given him. The Jewish people were not interested and still worshiped the idol of a golden calf. The old testament tells us that this was a major turning point for the Jewish people. It was when they began to believe in the "one" God.

My point here is that both the Rosicrucians and Freemasons trace their history back to ancient Egypt and it's mystery school at Heliopolis. Freemasonry traces it through the Jewish religion as well and claims to retain the teachings of "King Solomons Temple". This is further traced through the Jewish Essene Community that was known as the "Bretheran in White" or the White Brotherhood.

The Scottish Rite of Freemasonry is openly Kabalistic and draws upon old testament material and Jewish mysticism. It is not considered Christian but pre-Christian. The York Rite of Freemasonry traces it's history through an Egyptian Highpriest that was converted to Christianity.

The Rosicrucians trace their own history through related channels as well as through the alchemists and early scientists and philosophers. They were also heavily influenced by Gnostic Christianity and condemned by the Roman Catholic Church.

It is important to realize that certain philosophical concepts can not be grasped without a foundation being laid. Other philosophical concepts must first be encountered and assimilated. This can only happen through the process of "Higher Education".

For most of Europe in the dark ages the Holy Roman Catholic Church was the only source of literacy unless you were rich enough to have a personal tutor. The common person was never exposed to philosophical concepts that might have made his or her life richer and more rewarding.

Instead, the external authority of the Church told them what to believe and how to live.

1-Modern Survivalism

Survivalism is an interesting word that is gaining acceptance and popularity today in response to its anti-thesis "corporate conformity". As the world moves toward big brother and corporate conformity we find this equal and opposite movement within society as well.

In the computer industry and the internet community we can find examples in the contrast between open source software and material like Linux and corporate giants like Microsoft. The web browser Firefox uses open source material that is freely shared and Internet explorer uses closed source material that is highly protected.

The debate about keeping the internet free and the need to regulate it rages in political debates around the world. Both sides have their reasoning and valid concerns.

The real issue is about internal authority vs external authority. Do we need external authority with laws and regulations to restrict and control our lives? Can we be trusted to act upon our own internal authority being guided soley by the voice of our conscience?

These are hard questions and the real answer is that some people need to follow internal authority and others need external authority to feel safe. Humanity is divided along these lines and it always has been. There is no easy solution.

The Modern Survivalism movement is created out of a need for personal freedom, independence and self competence in living. Free individuals are uniting as a political force in expressing and making room for these values. These are largely the values that the United States of America was founded upon.

Rosicrucianism and Freemasonry were the principle vehicles expressing these survivalist values. In colonial America Benjamin Franklin founded a Rosicrucian Settlement as a utopian community. The Boston Tea Party was a Masonic Lodge activity.

In Germany Martin Luther was the head of the Rosicrucian movement and the leader of the entire protestant movement away from the Catholic Church. This led to the Jacobite rebellion and the creation of many variants of Christianity.

In England Sir Francis Bacon was the head of the Rosicrucian movement and created the daring social experiment known as Freemasonry.

Today Rosicrucianism and Freemasonry are largely forgotten and devalued. They no longer apply to our modern world. Membership has faltered and they are not attracting the new blood of younger generations. Their time is over but the values and ethics of personal freedom live on within the survivalism movement and within the internet itself.

Every generation has its own frontier and the internet is the frontier for our generation. The spirit of freedom is alive and well even if the names and terms have been changed.

At one time it was the Catholic church that needed to be challenged. In todays world the universities and corporations need to be challenged. The need for a college education and corporate conformity are buzz words that threaten personal freedom for generations to come.

Like the free internet and open source material there needs to be alternatives for the portion of society that can not flourish in a restrictive environment. There needs to be a vehicle for the expression of morals, values and self empowerment techniques that is available to everyone regardless of social position. All it takes is access to the internet.

This is what the OAK material is. It is an expression of timeless values and concepts placed within the framework of modern societiy and its needs. I am a Rosicrucian and a Freemason. Both vehicles are dying. They no longer appeal to the younger generation. Modern Survivalism is taking their place. Modern Survivalism is where we need to be going to ensure personal freedom and independence for future generations. This will happen through a free internet.
