The Seven Stages of Freedom

There are seven stages in the process of becoming free.

Freedom of Spirit. The first stage is to become free in spirit. This is our life and this is our opportunity to live an exciting and fulfilling life. It is too important to waste. The fear of death and bodily harm is probably the greatest obstacle to personal freedom. Because of this fear we don't even try to better ourselves and remain caught in a living death situation. We are alive but not alive. Our spirit has been broken.

It is better to die than go through life with a broken spirit. If we don't have our own souls what good are we? We can become free in spirit through the development of a strong ego and good self-esteem. This can be done through simple competency in life. Basic survival skills, basic self-defense and basic first aid skills will do wonders in this area. When we feel good about ourselves we also feel good about life and what we can do.

Freedom of Mind. The second stage is to become free in our minds. We are trapped within our thoughts and our personal belief system. It is hard to think outside the box and that is what we need to do. When we can't find a solution that does not mean there is no solution. It means that our minds will not go there. We act according to what we believe is real. When we have false or irrational beliefs our actions will be false or irrational. Our options in life are only as good as our thought processes.

It is even harder when common sense and experience says something is one way and society tells us we are wrong. Modern society is not rational and we are expected to believe things that are not true. It is hard to stand up and believe something that society does not validate. It is easy to say that we value things more highly that we have worked hard for. That is a self evident truth. But then offer someone the opportunity to learn through hard work or get something for nothing and they will most likely choose to take the free gift and pass on the hard work.

Self-evident truth can not be denied even by an irrational society. The most important truths are so simple anyone can sense their rightness. When life gets so complex and crazy that it no longer makes sense it is time to get back to the simple basics of self evident reality and take a stand. That is what I mean by modern survivalism.

Freedom to Live in the Present Moment. The next stage of freedom is the present moment. We live in the present moment but many people live in the past or in the future planning for some day that never comes. The present moment offers many life changing opportunities if we could only recognize them and take advantage of the right ones. What can we do right now to make tomorrow different?

Our immediate environment is the result of past actions. What we do right now will cause ripples of effect that will create what happens to us tomorrow. If we keep doing what we are doing we will continue to get the same results. If we want change in our lives we need to do something different and we need to do it now.

Freedom to Enjoy Life.Experiencing joy and pleasure is the next stage of freedom. Too many people don't know how to have fun and enjoy life. They take things too seriously. Work hard and play hard is the key to a rich and rewarding life. All work and no play is a form of self punishment. Work can be fun and it can also be a reason for living. The person is truely blessed that has found what their life's work is and doing it.

I wish everyone could find work that was satisfying and rewarding. Life is way too short to spend in a stressful work environment where you are not treated with respect and dignity. It has taken me many years before I realized that you don't need to settle for an abusive supervisor or degrading employment. There are good jobs out there that treat people right and there are even more bad jobs out there that treat people like animals. If you settle for being treated like an animal you can't expect to find something exciting and rewarding. It is not about money. It is about being treated right.

I work two jobs and am treated right in both of them. I am not drained of energy when I get home. There is enough of me left to contribute time and energy to my family and to Anarchist World. Could I ask for any more?

When you can look that abusive employer in the face and tell them to take their job and shove it you have found freedom. There is power in knowing that you can start over at any time. There is power in knowing that no matter what happens you will be able to survive and get through tough times. Your anger can help build determination and will power.

Freedom to Start Over. This is the next stage of freedom, knowing that you can survive and start over if you need to. It is only when you know this in your heart that you can feel free to move on to better things and take more risks. Life is not certain and if we are afraid we might never try for those things we dream of.

If you are afraid of loosing everything you can't take the needed risks to become successful. Roll up your sleeves and get out there and try it. We learn through trial and error. If we don't try and if we don't make mistakes we don't get anywhere. Many successful businessmen have gone bankrupt two or three times before making it big. They needed to learn what it takes to become successful. Learning the hard way was the only way. They wanted it badly enough to risk everything.

Freedom to Love.Meaningful love relationships are the next stage of personal freedom. It is in love relationships that we find the freedom to express who we really are at the most intimate levels to someone we love. If we can't do that we are never really free. The give and take within love relationships is some of the most powerful experiences that life has to offer and it is free.

If you have not found the above personal freedoms you will not find this one. Our romantic partners tend to lock us into relationships that reflect our current life position and circumstances and keep us there. If we are poor and enter into a love relationship the energy dynamic of the relationship will tend to keep us poor. Survival pressures will not allow us to give the time and energy to the relationship that it needs.

A free romantic love relationship means entering it as a free and self sufficient and self sustaining individual. Those same energy dynamics will keep us free.

Freedom To Live in a Supportive and Loving Family and Community. Believe it or not there are healthy families and communities out there and we can find them if we choose. If we hang out with unhealthy people we will not find a healthy path. We need to hang out with healthy people. They will act as role models and show us the way. There is nothing wrong with being ordinary.

Finding others of like mind and with similar values and beliefs is one of the most powerful things life has to offer. We can be mutually supportive of each other and gain inspiration to help us through the tough times.

Good friends watch our backs and we trust them to be there when we need them. That means we need to watch their backs and be there for them as well. A person can't have too many good friends.

Ideas Become Emotions;Emotions Become Actions

When you think about something long enough and hard enough you begin to get emotional about it. When you get emotional enough about something you will be driven to act on it.

This might not be true in the literal sense but it certainly seems to be true in the experiential sense. Thinking about something is both time investment and work. It uses energy and we become fatigued. Going to college or trying to figure out the taxes are examples of how draining hard mental work can be. The more we do the easier it gets for us. We are building our mental muscles up and finding new ways to use them.

With practice we can study longer and harder than we used to. This means that we are becoming competent and things that used to wear us out don't bother us any more. Becoming competent develops good self-esteem and confidence in our mental abilities. As we become more sure of ourselves and our abilities we express our emotions more. It might simply be because we are not so drained and have the emotional energy now or it might be because our thoughts and mental activity are taking on a more solid and earthy basis.

We can see the same things happen with emotions. Strong emotions are linked to physical responses. The "Fight or Flight" instinct takes over in extreme emotional crisis. When our emotions get to high we are literally driven to physical action to get some type of relief from unbearable stress and pressure.

This principle can be used in a self empowering manner as well. When we understand that thoughts become emotions and emotions become actions we gain insight into how to achieve personal goals. It becomes obvious that we need to think about our goals. We need to think about them so much that they take on an life of their own and we become emotional enough to go out and physically achieve them.

If we have a goal and we are not emotional about it we will never achieve it. Our emotions carry us through dry spots and difficult times. They support us when we have no other support and they inspire others as well.

The last point is making our physical actions count. Think of a toddler learning how to walk. It is not easy and they fall down time after time but never give up. When they have physically tried enough times they gain the muscular coordination to walk and even run.

Can goal achievement and being successful be any different? I don't think so. Our first physical actions toward goal achievement will be failures because we don't know what it takes to succeed. We need lots of physical actions toward our goal until we gain competence and it becomes easy.

Where Your Attention Goes Your Energy Flows

This point is so simple but so profound at the same time. Where your attention goes your energy flows. One of the great obstacles in life is not having enough energy to do the things we want to do. That is because we have a limited amount of energ that we can spend on things daily.

At night our bodies sleep and we rest. Any surplus energy we might have drains itself through our dreams. In the morning we wake up fresh and with more energy. During the day we spend that energy until it is gone.

We turn our attention to things that demand our attention like work or children and they drain us of energy. Then we turn our attention to things we are interested in. Perhaps we want to take a new class and learn somthing or read a book. Maybe we get on the internet or watch our favorite tv shows.

Everywhere we turn there is something that is trying to get our attention. We need to choose which things deserve our attention and which things don't. In the matter of energy conservation being open minded does not work. When we listen to some one with problems that they are not interested in solving our energy is drained uselessly. When we tackle a problem that is over our head and we fail our energy is again wasted.

The main thing to identify is if something is a waste of time and an energy drain and then avoid it. When possible stick with things that produce some type of results so the time and energy count for something.

Commercials and promotional ads are doing the same thing. They are attracting your attention in the hopes you will buy things. Money is a form of energy as well.

The main purpose of this post is to share how important time and attention really are and how your energy does flow toward those things you give your attention to. Be as conscious of this as possible and make your choices as to what gets your energy. Don't let other people choose for you.

Decide What you want and go for it

Decide what you want and go for it! We learn by doing and not by wishing or thinking. How can we know if what we want is even possible if we don't give it a try?

The world is filled with people too timid to even ask directly for what they want from others. They don't realize how powerful simply asking for what you want can be. They wait for people to give it to them as if others could read their minds and know what they wanted.

Even more important getting something is so much different than wanting something. Achieving or receiving something takes place on all sensory levels of physical experience. Wanting something takes place on the intellectual or emotional levels only and is very incomplete. It is like the difference between thinking about an orgasm and having an orgasm. Even the memory is never like the experience.

When we decide on something and set out to get it the first thing we encounter are obstacles. The more we try the harder it is and it seems like we don't make any progress at all. That's because the reality of what we want is so different than our conception of what we want. The first step is to bring our wishes into step with physical reality if that is possible. That means bursting a few idealistic bubbles.

After being hit with the harsh reality of things we need to consider if we still want to pursue our goal. This is an important and neccessary part of goal achievement. Stop and think about this for a minute. Goal achievement is related to competence. When we achieve competence we achieve our goal. Are we willing to do what it takes to become competent?

Too many people are unwilling to do something that takes a lot of effort. That means they will never become competent at life or goal achievement. They want things to be easy and given to them. Nature does not work that way and it never will. Only a perverted social system will reward sloth and helplessness.

Find out how other people have achieved similar goals and try some of the things they have done. Find out what works for you and what doesn't work. Develop those things that work and discard those things that don't. Build from success not from failure. We all have things that work for us. Use those things as a springboard into new activities.

Brilliant ideas are a dime a dozen. They are worthless. Millions of people have good ideas every day. Only a handful of people achieve a prototype or working model of their idea. Even fewer can make their idea into a successful commercial venture. Getting what you want is not about having the idea. It is about bringing your idea into physical reality where it can work for you as you intend it to. Again this takes simple competency.

Competency is possible through small step by step successes over a period of time. Each small success adds skill and increases self esteem. Both are needed for goal achievement. You will know when competency is reached because things that once were hard will seem easy and almost effortless. You can do them without thinking about them even. The bottom line is that if you don't even try, you won't move from where you are right now.

Don't Relate Your Soap Opera to Others

Relating our personal soap opera to others might be enjoyable but it does not help. Telling dramatic stories about how we have been wronged or misunderstood actually strengthens the soap opera. We become more vested in the drama than we are in finding support or a solution. We get all worked up again and don't let things drop or die away naturally.

"Guess what my wife did last night?"

"You know what my husband told me when I asked for a new refrigerator?"

These are stories told to entertain others with the ongoing drama that proves our life is interesting. It is a lot different than sitting down and asking someone to listen and help. Everyone wants bigger than life experiences so we tend to exaggerate and embellish.

Most of our stories are about things that bother us or people that bother us. In telling our soap opera many small innocent things can get blown up and take on different meanings until we become convinced that our wife is cheating on us or our husband is abusing the children.

Our listeners add their own drama to ours and soon grandma and grandpa need to sell their home and move into a nursing home where they can be taken care of properly. Forget about what they want. All you know is grandpa fell and broke his hip. Grandma isn't strong enough to take care of him.

Everyone has opinions and loves a good story. Soon the story is not even ours any more. By telling stories our friends form wrong impressions based upon false data. Sure, they might be supportive and on our side but we might be in the wrong. This is especially true when we are telling negative stories about our partners, friends or family members. False impressions can be very harmful in the long run. There are two sides to every story.

Indiscriminate sharing just provides gossip and prevents us from letting go and healing from the injury or injustice. Others will bring it up again long after the fact just to see how you are doing and what the news is. It also means that we are talking negatively about those we love and care about behind their back. If we do that to those we love, how can we be trusted?
